When it comes to water safety, the most common question we hear from parents is about timing. We believe that the ability to navigate the water is a fundamental life skill that should begin as early as possible. At our facility, we see firsthand how early exposure creates a baseline of safety and a lifelong love for swimming.

Infant Survival and Early Self-Rescue

We recommend starting as soon as your child is crawling, which is often around six to twelve months old. At this developmental stage, infants can begin learning vital self-rescue skills, such as rolling onto their backs to float and breathe. These foundational techniques provide an essential layer of protection and competence long before traditional strokes are introduced.

Building Confidence Through Early Consistency

Starting young allows us to capitalize on a child’s natural lack of fear, replacing it with healthy respect and calculated confidence. We utilize a 1:1 student-to-teacher ratio to ensure that every infant and toddler receives the personalized attention they need. Regular practice in our warm, shiver-free pool helps normalize the aquatic environment, making swimming a joyful, stress-free experience.

Transitions to Independent Swimming Skills

As children grow from toddlers into preschoolers, their motor skills evolve, allowing them to transition from basic survival to independent swimming. We focus on the “swim-float-swim” sequence, which teaches children how to move through the water effectively while knowing how to rest and breathe. This progression ensures they are physically and mentally prepared for more advanced stroke work later.

Lifelong Benefits of a Head Start

Beginning swim lessons early sets the stage for advanced stroke development and even competitive swimming in the future. We find that students who start with survival training have better body position and stronger kicks as they age. By investing in these skills now, we are giving your child the tools to stay safe and active for years to come.

Choosing the right time to begin your child’s aquatic journey is a significant decision for any family. We are dedicated to providing a safe, supportive environment where children of all ages can gain the competence necessary to stay safe around water. Whether you are interested in infant self-rescue or advanced stroke work, PhD Swim School is here to guide your family every step of the way.
