FUNdations

(For students 3 years old and up who can swim-float-swim 10 feet)

FUNdations, the premier program for children and toddler swimming lessons in Durham, NC, at PhD Swim School. Designed for children three years and up who have graduated from a survival swim program, this class builds on essential water safety skills in a fun, structured, and engaging environment.

FUNdations

The main purpose of the FUNdations class is to improve your child’s body position in the water, refine their kick technique, and ensure their life-saving skills remain sharp—all while having fun! In our FUNdations swim lessons, students move beyond basic survival and begin focusing on foundational swimming techniques.

  • Hand-Lead Swimming: Students will learn or improve hand-lead swimming, focusing on good kick technique on both their front and back.
  • Pre-Stroke Drills: We introduce a series of drills that prepare students for the arm movements taught in our Beginning Stroke class.
  • Fun & Engagement: A variety of toys, games, and activities are incorporated into every lesson to encourage a love of the water in addition to continued respect for it.

What Age Is This Appropriate For?

FUNdations is for recent Survival graduates, three years old and up.

Why Should My Child Do FUNdations Classes?

Learning to swim is a motor skill, and just like any other motor skill, it must be practiced regularly and correctly to be retained. Imagine if your child learned to walk in three to six weeks but then never practiced walking again! FUNdations ensures their skills stay sharp.

Can My Child Join Phd Swim School At This Level?

We will accept a new student into this program only if they have been trained by a similar survival swim program and can successfully demonstrate a 10-foot swim-float-swim on the first day of class.

What Are The Skills-Specific Goals Of This Level?

Your Child's Swim Journey Continues

We believe in a clear, progressive path for every swimmer. FUNdations is the vital link between water survival and true swim technique. Once your child has mastered the hand-lead swim-float-swim and has excellent body position, they will be ready for the next exciting step: Beginning Stroke.
