At our swim school in Durham, NC, we know that consistency is the key to confidence. While nothing replaces the hands-on instruction you get in the pool, the bathtub is a fantastic, low-stress environment to reinforce what we teach in class. Whether you are prepping for newborn swim lessons or supporting a child currently enrolled in toddler swim lessons, you can turn bath time into a fun and productive learning opportunity. Here are three simple ways you can practice essential skills at home. Enroll today.

Conditioning to Get the Face Wet

One of the biggest hurdles in kids’ swim lessons is the sensation of water on the face. You can normalize this in the tub. Instead of strictly shielding your child’s eyes during rinsing, gently trickle water over their forehead and face. Use a cheerful cue like “Ready, go!” before pouring. This helps them learn to close their eyes and hold their breath on command, a fundamental step for our survival swim lessons, where a calm reaction to water is vital.

Blowing Bubbles for Breath Control

Breath control is the foundation of safe swimming. Encourage your child to practice blowing bubbles in the bathwater with their mouth. For younger toddlers, you can make this a game by asking them to “hum” to the fishies underwater. This teaches them to exhale when submerged rather than inhaling—a critical safety distinction that prevents them from swallowing water.

Assisted Back Floating

Floating is the cornerstone of self-rescue. In a shallow tub, you can support your child’s head and let them relax their body while their ears submerge. This helps them get used to the feeling of buoyancy and water in their ears without the vastness of a large pool. It reinforces the muscle memory of the “float” portion of the swim-float-swim sequence we teach.
