Introducing your infant to the water is about more than just fun splashes; it is about building a foundation of safety and confidence that lasts a lifetime. While infants aren’t ready for the butterfly stroke, they are incredibly capable of learning life-saving maneuvers. We focus on gentle, evidence-based techniques that empower even our youngest swimmers to stay safe.

Breath Control and Submersion

The most fundamental skill we teach is the ability to hold one’s breath upon entering the water. Infants have natural reflexes that we help transition into conscious breath control. By practicing gentle submersions, we ensure that babies remain calm and composed if their faces go underwater, preventing panic and the accidental inhalation of water during play.

The Independent Back Float

Teaching an infant to roll onto their back and float independently is a critical survival skill. This position allows the child to breathe and rest until help arrives. We guide infants through the process of finding their natural buoyancy, ensuring they feel secure and stable while maintaining a clear airway, which is the cornerstone of our safety program.

Safe Entry and Exit

Understanding the physical boundaries of a pool is vital for early water safety. We teach infants how to safely enter the pool and, more importantly, how to find the wall and exit. By practicing “elbow, elbow, tummy, knee,” our students learn the physical sequence required to pull themselves out of the water to a secure surface safely.

Reaching for the Wall

If an infant accidentally falls into the water, their first instinct should be to return to safety. We train infants to immediately turn back toward the point of entry and reach for the pool edge. This muscle memory is developed through repetition, ensuring that they understand the wall is a place of safety and know exactly how to grab it.

Empowering your child with these fundamental skills provides peace of mind for the whole family while fostering a deep love for the water. At PhD Swim School, we specialize in transforming early curiosity into practiced safety through our expert-led swim lessons.
